Before delving into this article, it's essential to acknowledge its potentially triggering nature. The topics of oppression, choice, and voice discussed herein may evoke strong emotions, particularly for those who have experienced marginalization or trauma. I recognize the importance of creating a safe and respectful space for all readers. As you engage with the content of this article, I encourage you to practice self-compassion and to prioritize your well-being. Remember that your experiences and perspectives are valid, and your voice matters in the ongoing struggle for liberation and social justice.

I know what some of you may be thinking right now: “Why is this bitch writing about choice? How not exciting of them.” Well, cunt, I’m writing about the topic of choice because it’s important to me, and it should be important to you, too. Choice is something that has historically been stripped from our humanity—it’s even something we strip from each other, even on a “commoner” level. Yes, we are all guilty of this but it’s something that was drilled into us on an ancestral level. Choice, within the context of Somatic Sex Education (SSE), refers to an individual’s right to make informed decisions about their bodies, desires, and relationships, but beyond that choice impacts our sovereignty, volition, agency, self-determination, autonomy, empowerment, self-governance, and liberty. For the sake of this article, I’m going to focus in on the lens of SSE.

The significance of choice in SSE cannot be overstated, as it forms the bedrock of our guiding principles. Our voices embody the power of communication and self-expression, enabling us to articulate needs, boundaries, and desires, and by cultivating this very fundamental right, and unfortunately skill, we can assert ourselves in intimate interactions. When we are equipped with the knowledge and skills it takes to make choices that align with our values, morals, and ethics, we reclaim ownership over our experiences, and most importantly, our bodies. Likewise, when we’re encouraged to speak our truths, agency and self-determination begin to cultivate in all areas of our lives. However, learning to embrace this process is not without its challenges.

In a world layered with historically oppressive frameworks—ones that have long deprived our ancestors of their essential rights—it becomes imperative for us to recognize the enduring legacy of injustice and inequality that continues to shape our present realities. These frameworks, whether rooted in colonialism, white supremacy, patriarchy, racism, sexism, or other forms of systemic oppression, have permeated every aspect of our lives and our societies. They’ve not only restricted access to basic freedoms, but have also perpetuated cycles of marginalization, discrimination, and violence against marginalized communities. However, acknowledging the existence and impact of these frameworks is only the first step towards meaningful change; it is incumbent upon us to actively dismantle these systems of oppression, challenge ingrained biases and prejudices, and strive toward building a more equitable and just society for future generations through our actions.

A collective commitment to amplifying marginalized voices, advocating for policy reforms, redistributing resources, and engaging in ongoing education and dialogue (amongst many other avenues) is what’s necessary in addressing the root causes of these systemic injustices. In doing so, we honor the resilience and resistance of those who have come before us, while also paving the way for a future characterized by liberation, dignity, and equality for all. Let us remain steadfast as we navigate these complexities of our shared history and present challenges to create a world where every individual is afforded the opportunity to thrive, free from the shackles of oppression and discrimination.
